A student by the name of Daniel Young was actually issued a $150 ticket for spitting on a sidewalk at a bus stop.
Police were watching the area in an effort to reduce drug activity. Rather than staying on task, an officer decided spitting was absolutely vile in comparison to a drug peddling dealer. The good news… your your tax dollars are being put to good use!
In regards to the law itself, there are various accounts as to why it exists. Some say the anti-spitting law was adopted by several towns as a means to prevent the spread of disease such as tuberculosis. Other sources state sidewalks were made of wood planks and the spitting law was enacted to prevent the wood from becoming warped.
Either way, it is hard to believe someone in this century received a ticket for such a ridiculous law!
